ST. JOHN'S CYO BASKETBALL COACHING GUIDELINES
We won't have a firm idea of how many teams will be formed nor how many coaches will be needed until after the first tryouts. There will be a maximum of 1 head coach and 2 assistant coaches per team. Accordingly, although we would expect all of you are well qualified, we have set the following preferences for selecting coaches this season.
Guidelines for selecting coaches
- Commitment (few absences) to lead evening practices (predominately Fridays) and Saturday games
- Returning coaches from last year
- Other previous coaching experience
- Parents of a player active in the program
- Willingness to assist with player evaluations (see below)
- Feedback from parents at the end of last season
Our program will continue to offer assistant coaching positions to qualified and committed HS students. In addition to the guidelines above, HS coaches should meet the following.
Additional guidelines for HS coaches
- 15 years of age (or older) as of 8/31/09
- E-mail to Ken Jones with full name, address, phone, birthdate and list of any previous playing or coaching experience
Next year
As we did last year, at the end of the season we will solicit feedback from parents regarding their child's playing experience. As with other youth programs in Wellesley, part of this feedback will be directed toward coach evaluations. That input will be factored into the coaching selections for next season.
Tryouts
Tryouts will be held on Sunday, November 1 and November 8 at WMS gym (See the Tryout tab for schedule details). Teams will be selected and team assignments announced no later than the end of the second tryout.
Tryout Evaluators
Tryouts will be run with the assistance of “independent evaluators” (i.e. coaches who do not have input to the evaluation of their own child). The goal is to run the 1st tryout with no parent/child combinations in the gym at the same time. At the 2nd tryout the intended coach(es) for each team will participate in making any final adjustments between teams before assignments are announced. A second goal is to have about 1 evaluator for every 10 players in the gym.
If you wish to volunteer for a coaching role, please indicate so during the registration process. Additionally, you can contact Ken Jones at
